What is Stamp Duty?

Stamp duty is a legal tax payable on the purchase or transfer of property. It is levied by the state government and must be paid at the time of property registration. The stamp duty rate varies from state to state and is calculated as a percentage of the property's market value or agreement value, whichever is higher.

Registration Charges

In addition to stamp duty, registration charges are payable to the Sub-Registrar's office for registering the property in your name. Registration charges are typically 1% of the property value in most states but can vary. Together, stamp duty and registration charges can add 5-12% to the total cost of property acquisition.

Gender-Based Concessions

Several states offer reduced stamp duty rates for female buyers to encourage women's property ownership. States like Maharashtra, Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab offer 1-2% lower stamp duty for women. Registering property in a woman's name can lead to significant savings on stamp duty charges.
